Learning difficulties according to the Concise Oxford English Dictionary (eleventh edition) are difficulties in acquiring knowledge and skills to the normal level expected of those of the same age, especially because of mental disability or cognitive disorder.

Here in Kenya we have a small number of private schools that acknowledge that there is a category of children who struggle to learn. While the children follow the normal school curriculum they are timetabled to spend time in the Learning Support or Special Needs Classroom. Here you will find teachers who are equipped to assist the students depending on the individual child’s area of difficulty.

In these schools, the process of receiving assistance starts with the parents and the teacher meeting over the areas of concern usually brought up by the subject teachers.

The teacher is often in a position to carry out in-house assessments but also sends the parents with the child to an independent educational psychologist who is able run assessments and produce a written report based on the results of the assessments. This report often points out the areas of difficulty and serves as a guide to how the Learning Support teachers can provide assistance.

Parenting is not a dress rehearsal. As a father or mother only you know your child best and if you feel your he/she is struggling do your research. Find out which school is best suited to support your child’s needs. As adults they will thank you for taking the time to understand them and provide them with the assistance they need to be better equipped to deal with both their education and life.

In conclusion learning difficulties are a reality. Take sometime to read about Albert Einstein, the famous scientist and Nobel Prize winner and Sir Richard Branson.
